Children and Youth
All About the Kids!
St. Luke’s offers formation classes for children ages three through eighteen. There is something for everyone!
We have dedicated, loving teachers who serve as our storytellers and leaders for our programs. For more information on our programs for children, please contact Elizabeth White at engagement@stlukesboone.org.
Nursery
At St. Luke’s we have a loving staff to take care of our youngest members during the service. We offer two nursery rooms. We have a nursery room specifically for babies to young toddlers. A changing table, and clean floor mats are available for safe tummy-time, and the toys are specific for younger children. A second nursery room is designated for our older toddlers, or those who aren’t quite ready for Godly Play. In these rooms, children can explore, read, color, and get the jiggles out while having fun.
Godly Play
Ages 3 yrs – 2nd grade
Godly Play is a Christian Formation curriculum developed by Jerome Berryman, an Episcopal priest who is also a Montessori teacher. Godly Play is an intimate and hands-on way to share stories. It allows children and adults to wonder together. Godly Play begins with the history of God’s people in the Old Testament stories, follows the church calendar with the Sacred Stories of how and why we worship, and includes the stories of Jesus and the disciples, the Parables and stories of the Saints. Children can retell the stories to themselves and their friends, or make art responses to express how they think and feel about the stories.
Children’s Services
St. Luke’s holds several services just for the kids!
On Shrove Tuesday, the night before Ash Wednesday, children participate in the making of the Alleluia banner. This special banner gets hidden during Lent and makes its appearance on Easter morning. Palm leaves from Palm Sunday are burned to make ashes for Wednesday’s service. Ash Wednesday is another favorite children’s service. This is a family friendly, hands-on service led by Cyndi to teach the children all about why we celebrate Ash Wednesday, and the meaning of the ashes on our foreheads. Throughout the year, children are invited to many special services like these that help deepen their understanding of the Episcopal traditions.
Family Events
St. Luke’s also hosts several events open to all families. We have events like the Punkin’ Palooza and the Blessing of Animals in October; the Jesse Tree and visit from St. Nicholas in December; and more! At these events, we invite families to hear some of the stories and histories about the rituals of the Episcopal church.Great fun is had by all!
Youth Group
Ages 6th Grade – 12th Grade
The St. Luke’s Youth Group is open to those in middle and high school interested in Episcopal fellowship and a tight knit Boone community. During meetings on Sundays during the school year, the group eats dinner, engages in fun games and activities, easily digests the liturgy in lessons, and learns more about what discipleship looks like today. It is an intentional community of youth of developing faith that in addition to attending meetings, utilize the Greater Boone/Watauga area for activities and service, attend conferences with the Western North Carolina Episcopal Diocese, and host two lock-ins each year. The group welcomes all who would like to join a community for young people excited about faith and meeting others that want to share their talents and interests.
